This document summarizes the features of this version of the Japanese Language Kit and the changes that it makes to the System Software that might impact 3rd Party products. This is confidential information intended for Apple developers.
Overview
The Japanese Language Kit is a package that adds Japanese script capabilities to any System 7.1 Macintosh System. The core of the package is fonts, an input method, script resources and WorldScript II. Some extensions and a utility add additional functionality. An installer script and user documentation complete the package.

Installation
This product requires System 7.1 - any localized version. If you have already installed earlier script system resources, please remove them because they may confuse the installer. Only the Net Install version is included on this CD. Refer to the Installation and User Guide document on this CD for more details.
Japanese Script Bundle
The Japanese Script resources are identical to those in KanjiTalk 7. The major difference is that Japanese is installed as a secondary script, and these resources will have to be referenced explicitly because the primary script will be the default.
Fonts
Chicago is renumbered from ID 0 to 16383; 0 now means exclusively the SysFont (which is still Chicago on a Roman Script System). All fonts are identical to KanjiTalk 7 versions, but the font suitcase names have been translated to English.
Input Method
Kotoeri is identical to the KanjiTalk 7 version. The entire interface and filenames will remain in Japanese. Since this product does not include the KanjiTalk 7 Inline (TSMTE) extension, applications will be limited to Text Services Manager functionality (see Inside Macintosh Second Edition, Text Volume - available soon - for more information).
Extensions
The Language Kit extension enables compatibility with non-Primary script applications. This means that a localized Japanese application can operate on a non-Japanese system without modifying the Primary script. See the Developer Guidelines document on this CD for more details.
Utilities
The Language Register is a utility that give the user the ability to correctly set the language for the application user interface elements. THis is necessary for the applications whose region in the ‘vers’ resource is incorrect. See the Installation and User’s Guide for more details.
The KanjiTalk 7 version of TeachText is included to support Japanese TeachText documents. Although this version is TSMTE compatible, the Inline (TSMTE) extension is not included, so all input will use standard TextEdit and bottomline input.
KanjiTalk 7 differences
• KanjiTalk 7 includes 2 extensions, Text Services Manager - TextEdit (TSMTE) and the Composite Font Manager (CFM), which are not part of the base system or this product and are not officially supported outside of Japan. TSMTE is a patch to TextEdit to add Text Services Manager (TSM) compatibility and provide TSM’s inline input for TextEdit. The KanjiTalk versions of Finder and TeachText were also modified to be compatible with TSMTE.
• CFM is a proprietary font format that allows fonts to be broken into smaller pieces and shared. CFM fonts are not compatible with this product and can be identified by their icon.
• KanjiTalk has Japanese as the primary script, which includes a Japanese FInder interface and amoungst other things, determines how text will be sorted and dates will be displayed. The Japanese Language Kit does not effect the primary script of the system when it is installed. So in the case of a US system, Roman will remain the default script.
• KanjiTalk 7 includes a number of TrueType Kanji fonts not included in this product. Those fonts are currently unavailable to users outside of Japan.
Known Bugs (that are expected to be fixed before Golden Master)
• The installer does not install properly into a system that already has the Japanese Language Kit installed. It deletes the InputBackSupport file, but does not reinstall it. A temporary work around is to drag install InputBackSupport to the target System Folder and reboot.
Known Limitations (will not be fixed in this product)
• Finder and the file system can only support one script at a time.
• File system sorts all filenames in the Primary Script order.
• Toolbox routines don’t use Styled TextEdit and can’t display multiscript text.
• Notification Manager is limited to the primary script.
• Only applications and desk accesories can be registered with the Language Register application. Control panels, drivers, etc are not supported.
• Balloon Help for desktop icons will not display correctly if the text is not in the primary script.
• The System’s Application menu will not correctly display the name of a non-primary script application.
• There is no recommended way for an application to register its own language preferences. The Language Register utility is currently the only way to do this.
